JRPGs are definitely something that are not what they used to be and it's rare that you see one that makes you actually want to drop everything and play it. While scouring around the internet, I happened to come across one on Kickstarter that pays homage to the old school JRPGs.
Soul Saga is such a game, being inspired by the likes of Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Suikoden and Persona. The game has been fully funded and has reached the stretch goal to allow it to be on more than just the PC and Mac, as it will also be released on Wii U, PS4 and PS Vita. It is currently sitting at around $95,000 and all stretch goals from here on out will help contribute to more content for the game.
