Square Enix have stated that DRM will continue to be used for a long time to come. TorrentFreak posed some questions to Adam Sullivan, Square Enix America’s Senior Manager of Business and Legal Affairs.
Some were pretty blunt, but that certainly makes for a more interesting interview. When asked simply, "Does DRM work?" Sullivan replied:
"We have a well-known reputation for being very protective of our IPs, which does deter many would-be pirates. However, effectiveness is notoriously difficult to measure — in short, we rely on the data available to us through our sales team and various vendors, along with consumer feedback.”
Sullivan is, however, aware that DRM should never affect players, saying that the key is that 'DRM can’t interfere with the customer’s ability to play the game'. But, as many people are aware, can't and doesn't are two different things.
Torrent Freak also asked if DRM was here to stay or not, to which the reply was:
"This depends on your definition of DRM, but generally yes — I think DRM will be essential for the foreseeable future.”
