Austin Wintory, beloved and Grammy-nominated video game composer behind flOw, Journey, The Banner Saga, and the upcoming Abzu is being sued by his union, AFM Local 47, for violating their contract for creating and recording video game music. The contract, which went into effect a couple years ago, has been universally rejected by both the industry and the composers the union represents, and has forced the video game industry to go elsewhere to record music for their games.
Austin Wintory, who works out of "right-to-work" state Texas, is legally allowed to take any work offered to him regardless of his union's laws, but the situation may ultimately cost him thousands in legal battles. He asks that those who can share his story, hopefully to help pressure AFM to change its unjust laws that are preventing its composers from working on video games.
Mr. Wintory is a friend of the site, having composed the music for our 2012 Game of the Year, Journey. We interviewed him that year about his work and his grammy nomination.
