After the events of the third game and thanks to Sly getting amnesia, joining up with Carmelita, he goes his own way and finishes up some training with The Guru. He also ends up joining the pro-racing circuit, but ends up quitting that because he couldn't get any sponsors due to his reckless driving. He does join the destruction derby because of the above, then quickly agrees to rejoin the team when Bentley asks him.
