Artes are apart of every single tales game and are are basically the physical attacks that each charcter can perform aside from their basic attack combos. Artes usually help you understand what type of character someone is.
If you look at llyod from Tale sof symphonia you will see that he has a bunch of Artes with the word sword in them and if you execute them you'll see that he pulls out his sword to do them. the same goes goes for Raine of the same game most of her skills are of the restorative type and you can tell by the names alone.
Theres always modifications to the system but the basics for the most part are usually the same and easy to understand from game to game.
