Health, Lives & Polterpups
When Luigi's life reaches zero he will pass out. The exception to this is when Luigi has a Gold Dog Bone, in which case the Polterpups will take the bone and revive Luigi by licking his face, basically giving him an extra life.
There is no saving mid-mission, so failing mid-mission can cause you to lose a lot of time. Be careful and try and find those Gold Dog Bones.
Capturing Ghosts
As Luigi travels through the mansions to recover the shattered Dark Moon pieces he will encounter many ghosts affected by the loss of the soothing effect it had. In order to protect himself, Luigi will need to capture ghosts and collect the coins they drop to progress and become stranger.
Strobulb
Shining light via flashlight is no longer sufficient to stun the ghosts that lay in your path, instead you will now need to activate the Strobulb expansion on the Poltergust 5000. Dodging the incoming attacks with the new ability to jump, Luigi can then suck up the ghosts with his fabulous vacuum.
The Poltergust 5000
This super-powered vacuum cleaner can interact with almost every object in the mansions and suck up window curtains, coins in hard-to-reach places, and primarily ghosts. Additionally, the blow function you to make ceiling fans spin.
By earning upgrades with the treasure you find in the mansions, the Poltergust 5000 can become even more powerful as you progress. The upgrades are in a set order and are not customizable.
Dark-Light Device
There are many hidden things throughout the mansions that can only be revealed by dark light, which uncovers the spirit balls and reveals the hidden feature. Using this new extension of the Poltergust 5000, find the path to the Boos or even hidden treasures.
These include:
- Rescuing the Toads from paintings
- Revealing invisible doors
- Revealing invisible walkways
Collectibles
Speaking of Toads and collectibles, let's quickly go over the types of collectibles and what they are used for.
Toads
The toads are E. Gadd's assistants that have gone missing. It is Luigi's job to find them and bring them to a teleporter that leads back to E. Gadd's lab. In order to do this, you will need to use the Toads to solve different puzzles and access areas that can only be reached by using the Toads. This usually involves shooting them through objects or across certain areas.
Boos
There is at least one Boo per mansion that usually hides within invisible areas. This means that you will need to use the new dark-light attachment to track them down and capture them. For each one you find you will unlock "something" for each mansion (this is unknown at this time).
Coins
As you progress through the game you will find and earn coins. These can be used to upgrade your Poltergust 5000.
