The Stanley Parable started out as an interactive fiction mod for the Source engine built by Davey Wreden, and released in July 2011. For the new "high definition" remake released in October 2013, Wreden worked with experienced Source developer William Pugh.
The game casts players in the role of Stanley, an office worker whose job is never fully explained. Stanley's experience is narrated by british actor Kevan Brighting, and the player is able to choose whether or not to follow the narrator's "script" or take their own path. Going against the narrated actions causes the script and world to change in ever more surreal, fourth-wall-breaking ways.
