Tom Clancy's The Division is set in a post-apocalyptic New York. Inspired by real world preparations for various potential catastrophic events, such as Operation Dark Winter, which is the name given to a series of bio-terrorist attack simulations conducted in 2001, The Division is set after a deadly plague spreads through the United States on Black Friday.
The virus spread rapidly. On day one all of the hospitals in the country were filled to capacity. By day two resources were being rationed and quarantine zones established. On day three all international trade and movement of people ground to a halt. On day four the power failed and desperation begins to set in - by day five society has broken down and the plague is no longer the primary threat, people are.
In short, the result of the widespread outbreak of the plague is a total breakdown of society within just five days. The Division is the name of an organization originally tasked with preventing the outbreak. After their failure, their new task is to attempt to prevent the continued breakdown of society and restore some kind of order.

The player takes on the role of a member of The Division. You will scour the streets and ruined structures of a now post-apocalyptic and virtually war torn New York, attempting to maintain order, undertaking missions, stamping out gang activity and generally just trying to survive.
