Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know! is a dungeon crawler that is played from a top-down view. It can be played by one person or up to four, cooperatively, and the overall goal of the game is make it through all 100 floors of the Royal Dungeon., using one of four starting characters or more that are unlocked.
Dungeon Gameplay
Four players can be in a party at once, with the party initially consisting of Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, Marceline, and Cinnamon Bun. More playable characters can be unlocked throughout the game, and two, King of Mars and Gunter, are available as DLC on the console versions.
The game consists of a 100 floors dungeon, each of which is preset and filled with enemies, such as Lub Glubs, Baby Pigs, and Skeletons. There is also treasure scattered throughout the levels, which can be used to upgrade the players or buy bonuses. The ultimate goal of the game is to survive through all one hundred levels and defeat the five bosses that appear after every twenty levels.
Up to four players can play at once, each taking control of a different character in the party. Each character has their own special abilities, melee attacks and charge attacks which can change the battle in various ways. In addition, extra weapons can be found or bought. Each player has a few hearts which, if depleted, will make the player restart the dungeon.
Familiars are smaller characters which will sometimes appear in the dungeons in some sort of peril. If the player rescues the familiar, it will follow the player around and temporarily give them a boost or help fight off enemies. In addition, in the WiiU and 3DS versions, BMO will appear on the touchscreen to offer the player hints.
Surface Gameplay
After every five floors, the player can visit the surface, where they won't encounter combat but they can interact with other characters that don't appear in the dungeons.
Vendor
On the surface, players can visit Choose Goose, the game's item vendor. This is where players can spend money found throughout the previous levels to buy new weapons and goods. The items bought here can change the gameplay by giving the playable characters new abilities. Treasure that isn't spent at the Choose Goose cannot be taken back into the dungeon, so the player will lose it.
Side-Quests
Some side characters, such as Tree Trunks and Susan Strong, will appear at the surface to offer the player extra side quests. These give the player a specific goal to complete when they go back into the dungeon. If these side quests are accomplished, then the player can get new items the next time they come to the surface.
Upgrades
Some characters on the surface will offer ugrades to the player if they have enough money. Mr. Cupcake upgrades "Thumps," which serves as the players health. Muscle Princess upgrades "Rowdiness," or how much damage the attacks do. Lady Rainicorn upgrades "Focus," which controls how quickly charge attacks work. Neptr upgrades "Imagination," which will give the player new special attacks.
