Turned out not to be an issue after all. Once I got the runes, I was able to 'buy' the egg and fang for 0 gems and complete the quest :)

Are you using a computer or phone? If you using a phone, delete the app from your phone. If you're using a computer and accessing the game from Facebook, look on the left side of the screen and move your icon to the left of the Island Experiment name under "Games." Click on delete app.

You get four free workers -- three originally when starting the game and the 4th from the spider web after clearing parts of the island. The 5th worker is earned by completing the Island arch quest started in October 2016. Any other workers, you will need to purchase at $2.99 per worker. Features of the new island:

✴ We sent you a boat which is ready for transporting your heroes to the shores of the new island;

You cannot access other parts of the main island until you finish completing the tasks that allow the fog to clear. As you complete the required tasks, more of the island will become available to you.

Yes, you have to do each quest as required as each task leads to a different one which allows more fog to be cleared from the island but once you've completed it, you can get rid of the statute by clicking on the move "X" and then clicking "Destroy." Be aware that destruction of objects cost gems.
