At E3 last year Microsoft announced that a reboot of the original Xbox game Phantom Dust was being developed by Darkside Game Studios for Xbox One. After issues with the development of the game, however, Microsoft decided to cut their ties with the developer and Darkside was forced to shut down.
The issues that caused the closure of Darkside Game Studios were not known until a recent report was released. Apparently, the budget for the game was originally $5 million, but the studio wanted another $2 or $3 million. Microsoft, after spending $2 million on the game, decided that it was not worth the extra money.
"There was just no leeway," said a source who was familiar with the development of the game. "[Microsoft] said, 'OK, let’s cut our losses.'"
"Microsoft partnered with Darkside Game Studios in the development of Phantom Dust, but our working relationship has now ended," said a Microsoft representative.
