The video game industry at retail grew 18 percent year-over-year in June to $869.4 million, according to NPD. Software sales increased 21 percent to $345.5 million, while hardware increased eight percent to $313.1 million.
Software sales in the first six months of 2015 were up three percent when compared to the same period in 2014. Warner Bros. is the big winner as its revenue in June jumped 217 percent year-over-year.
Sony stated the PlayStation 4 was the top selling console for the month, thanks in part to the Batman: Arkham Knight bundle.
Microsoft stated that sales for the Xbox One are up 51 percent year-over-year, while the active number of Xbox Live users on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 increased 22 percent.
Nintendo announced that combined sales for the 3DS and Wii U increased 20 percent year-over-year. The increase is due to the success of the New 3DS XL, which helped increase 3DS sales 40 percent.
"A major factor for the rise in overall software sales was the success of June launches, which collectively rose close to 300 percent in dollar sales compared to June 2014 launches. This more than made up for the fact that there was a slide in the performance of May launches in June compared to last year, which is somewhat expected given the comparison to hits like Mario Kart and Watch Dogs from May 2014," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.
Here are the top 10 games for NPD June:
Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
LEGO: Jurassic World (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, 3DS, Wii U, PSV)
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Splatoon (Wii U)
Minecraft (Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Mortal Kombat X (PS4, Xbox One)
NBA 2K15 (Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, PC)
