Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm and LucasArts last year for $4.05 billion, has shut down the LucasArts division. In an official statement, Disney said:
"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."
Before the closure of LucasArts, Star Wars 1313 was being made as was the studio's other project Star Wars First Assault. However, there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. As a gift to their loyal fans, Raven, developers of Jedi Outcast and its sequel Jedi Academy, have released the source code for both games.
In an interview with Kotaku, Raven said “We loved and appreciated the experience of getting to make Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for LucasArts. As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with."
Who knows? Maybe in a year or so somebody will decide they want to make the next great Star Wars game - and when they do, loyal fans will be waiting.
