Earlier today, 2K Games announced via a teaser trailer the latest entry in the classic turn-based strategy franchise Sid Meier's Civilization, entitled Beyond Earth.
Where the past five games in the series (plus a handful of spinoffs) have been focused on the history of civilization on Earth, Beyond Earth ventures beyond for the first time, in the vein of Alpha Centauri, another well-known Sid Meier title.
Far in the future, a calamity known as the Great Mistake has rendered humanity's continued existence on Earth unfeasible, and it falls to you to lead a new civilization on a new world.
A number of changes have been made to the Civilization formula in keeping with the new theme. The most significant yet announced is the replacement of the tech tree (which is very much hierarchical and moves from "things discovered millenia ago" to "things discovered recently" and finally "things yet to be discovered") by the tech web, which gives you more freedom to choose the order of humanity's technological advancement.
The tech web consists of three affinities: Harmony is about fitting in with the new world, Supremacy about binding it to your will through advanced technology, and Purity about trying to regain the old culture of the society that existed on Earth.
Beyond Earth is currently scheduled for a Fall 2014 release.
