Nothing beats the non-stop thrills of a racing game. That last minute overtake to beat your friend to the line, that cheeky green shell to pull off the most unlikely of wins, or just the joys of driving down a highway at 230mph. 2014 saw a flurry of high-quality releases in the genre, but one title finished ahead of the pack. Here's the 2014 starting grid (in more ways than one!).
The Nominees Are:
Mario Kart 8
Forza Horizon 2
MotoGP 14
DriveClub
And the Winner is...
Mario Kart 8
What can be said about this game that hasn't already been said? Mario Kart 8 takes a well established formula - choose your favourite Mario mascot and race to the finish - and completely flips it on its head. Quite literally. The addition of anti-gravity produces some stunning racetracks, made all the more amazing thanks to the game's beautiful graphics and art style. New items, such as the Super Horn, which allows you to destroy that ever-troublesome blue shell, add yet another layer to the long-running franchise.
The title also breaks new grounds for Nintendo, featuring paid DLC in the form of new tracks, characters and karts. With more on the horizon, we can see ourselves still playing Mario Kart 8 for a long, long time to come. And, at the end of the day, is that not what we want from a video game?
