The story begins in Zanarkand, where we see one of the main characters, Tidus, who is a Blitzball star, getting ready for a game. During the game, a massive wave goes through the city and destroys everything. It is revealed that the thing destroying the city is called "Sin" and when him and Auron confront it, they are swallowed by it.
Tidus awakes somewhere else, where he ends up meeting Rikku, Wakka and eventually Yuna, who is on a pilgrimage to summon powerful beings called Aeons, and defeat Sin. Tidus ends up helping out Yuna on her pilgrimage, becoming one of her bodyguards.
