BattleBlock Theater - Gameplay

The Basics

In BattleBlock Theater, players control a custom created prisoner that is forced to play through sadistic games devised by Hatty Hattington in a theater setting. At its core Battleblock Theater is a platformer - players run, jump and fight their way through levels - with elements of puzzle and adventure games.

The world of BattleBlock Theater is made up entirely of Blocks, with different blocks having different attributes and uses. Some, such as spike or water blocks are deadly, whilst others like the horse or boulder blocks can help the player.

Game Modes

Adventure Mode

Adventure Mode is the core gameplay,  which can be played solo or with another player cooperatively. In cooperative play, the two players can work together to complete levels and acquire gems (the game's form of currency, which can be exchanged for playable Prisoners in the Gift Shop).

Other collectible objects, which are used as a form of currency, is balls of Yarn, which can be used to bribe cats and unlock new weapons and power-ups. Each level also contains a piece of cake, which can be found in order to achieve an A+ star rank for the given level.

Adventure mode consists of various worlds, with each world being made up of a number of levels. To unlock the exit for each level you must collect a total of three gems.

Arcade Mode

Arena mode is a competitive mode with up to four players, which can be played free-for-all or in teams. There are several match types including:

  • Soul: The objective is to steal enemy soul and hold onto it to gain points or kill a soul-carrier to release their souls to roam the level.
  • Muckle: The objective is to kill the enemy team to earn team points.
  • Challenge: The objective is to score the best time on a given level.
  • King of the Hill: The objective is to stand on the crown blocks to gain your team points.
  • Color the World: The objective is to color more blocks than the other team.
  • Grab The Gold: The objective is to grab more gold from the golden whale than the other team and deposit it in the floating safe.
  • Ball Game: The objective is to get the ball in the basket.
  • Horse: The objective is to ride the opposing team's horse to your stables.

Level Editor

The Level Editor allows you to create your own stages for any game type. Levels can be assembled into a playlist, consisting of various Adventure and Arena levels, and uploaded to the community for others to download.

Level Editor tutorial:

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop is located on level selector for both Story and Arena modes. Inside, players can purchase Prisoners with the gems they've collected, buy Weapon withYarn, or trade with other players in the Trading Post (which is located on the second floor).
