BattleBlock Theater takes place on a mysterious island which the heroic duo - the nameless player character and his best friend Hatty Hattington - become shipwrecked on at the start of the game.
The duo soon discover that the island is not abandoned, as they first suspected. Instead, it's ruled over by vicious, technologically advanced cats, who have a penchant for torturing their 'guests' by forcing them to take part in deadly theater performances while they watch from the sidelines.
This is only the start of your adventure, however, as Hatty soon turns against you, seemingly as a result of the power possessed by his strange top hat. Hatty, now greedy for gold, forces all the prisoners of the theater (including you) to take part in these deadly plays.
