The Elder Scrolls Online is set during the Second Era, roughly 1000 years before the events of Skyrim. The main story concerns Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince of domination, and his attempts to seize control of Tamriel and bring it into his realm of Oblivion, Coldharbour. He is aided by Mannimarco, the King of Worms, a notorious and extremely powerful necromancer.
Tamriel is ravaged by war, both with Molag Bal and between the different factions of the game: the Aldmeri Dominion, the Ebonheart Pact and the Daggerfall Covenant. The player's race determines their faction.
