In 2003, inXile (founded by Wasteland's producer, Brian Fargo) acquired the rights to Wasteland from Konami.
In 2007, Fargo said he was looking to bring back the Wasteland franchise.
In November 2007, possible concept images from Wasteland 2 were displayed in the main header of the inXile Entertainment website.
In February 2012, inXile, inspired by Double Fine's success in using Kickstarter to fund Double Fine Adventure, announced their plans to use crowdfunding to produce a new Wasteland game.
In March 2012, the Kickstarter page for the production of Wasteland 2 went live. A minimum budget of $1,000,000 was set for the project, but Fargo agreed to cover up to $100,000 if the project fall short, so the Kickstarter campaign's goal was set at $900,000. This made it the largest target for any Kickstarter project to -date.
The original goal of $900,000 was reached in under 43 hours.
In March 2012, it was also announced that if the total hit $2.1 million or more, the game would be co-developed by Obsidian Entertainment, and Chris Avellone in particular.
In April 2012, the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter ended. The project raised a total of $2,933,252 (making it the second highest crowd funded video game at the time), with an additional $107,152 contributed via Paypal.
It was confirmed that Obsidian would be working on the project.
In May 2012, it was announced that the developers would be using the Unity game engine for Wasteland 2.

In July 2012, it was announced that the original Wasteland would be bundled with the game.
Brian Fargo has stated that they intend to ship Wasteland 2 around October 2013.
