Combat occurs when one or more factions declares war on the player. Military units, including Navies or Armies, will become aggressive toward each other and can engage in combat.
Each army / navy is made up of units with multiple recruits and each military unit must have at least one General or Admiral. Additionally, each military unit has a cap of 40 recruits, with the cap on the number of armies / navies a faction can have at any time being based on the faction's power. A player can gain more power by conquering more regions and more gold.
Generals
When players create a General and begin training their troops the army enters a Muster Mode and cannot move. Generals gain skills and traits independently from the army they command. As the General levels up, players can choose which skills to purchase, while traits are based on what a General does in-game.
Purchasing Units & Mercenaries

When selecting military units, the player can choose to purchase new recruits for that unit. Recruitable units are based on the available recruits researched in the technology trees. Additionally, Mercenaries can be recruited and are not based on your faction.
Recruits cost money per turn, so loading up your units with multiple recruits that are unneeded can be costly.
Stances
Armies have changeable stances that determine many things, including their total movement points per turn or the ability to deploy traps for an ambush.
- Forced March - enables an army to march further, but will exhaust troops and reduce their fighting ability
- Defensive Stance - enables the player to place stakes and build temporary forts
- Ambush Stance - enables the army to remain hidden and attack the enemy with traps such as rolling balls of flaming hay
- Raiding Stance - lowers the range that the army can march, but greatly lowers its upkeep cost
