The Order: 1886, as the name implies, is set during the Victorian period. However, the game takes place in an alternate universe where, during this time, a war has been raging between humanity and an inhuman entity.
This protracted war sparks an industrial revolution. Whereas in this universe the industrial revolution ushered in social and economic changes, in the alternate universe of The Order: 1886 the industrial revolution is humanity's answer to the war. Technological progress is brought about in an effort to finally end the conflict.
This allows the game to blend Victorian aesthetics with modernized weaponry, creating a unique steampunk vibe.
In the game, you take on the role of a knight and member of an ancient order dedicated to protecting mankind from this mysterious enemy.
