Housemarque describe RESOGUN as a spiritual successor to their popuar Super Stardust series. Players of any of the Super Stardust games will therefore be familiar with the frantic and colourful shoot 'em up action that comprises RESOGUN's twin stick gameplay.
You'll work through either an arcade mode, similar to those found in the Super Stardust series, or you can take on a wave-like mode which pits them against increasingly difficult waves of enemies.

Controls
Whereas in Super Stardust players navigate around planets, in RESOGUN players move around/within a cylindrical plane that loops around. The left analog stick controls your ship's movement, whilst the right analog stick is used to fire your primary weapon.
Ships scale the cylindrical plane vertically, but will only be able to shoot to the left or right, changing directions as required to destroy enemies and dodge deadly hazards.
Worlds & Difficulty
There are a total of 5 worlds in the game, with each one split into three separate stages. The first two are normal, while the third level will feature that world's boss. The goal of each level is to defeat the enemy forces, as well as rescue all of the human survivors, which the enemies will either try to kill or abduct.
The game features four difficulty levels, with three available from the beginning. They differ by the damage you take, as well as the enemies firing more shots. The difficulties are Recruit, Experienced, Veteran and Master (needs to be unlocked).
Rescuing Survivors
At certain points players also need to rescue human survivors. By rescuing these human survivors players release power ups and shields. To rescue them, you need to find a key around the level that is in the form of a green ship. Destroy this ship and it will unlock the container the human was locked in. Pick them up and bring them to one of several pods around the level to rescue them.
Weapons
Players acquire access to a large number of weapons for their ship, including projectile weapons and bombs. Bombs allow players to clear huge swarms of enemies when they're about to be overwhelmed.
Power-ups
There will also be a number of different power-ups in the game. Power-ups thus far confirmed include:
- Shields
- Speed Boost
Enemies
The enemies found in RESOGUN are known as voxels. Enemies are actually made up of small voxels or cubes that have replicated to become much larger creatures and when destroyed they explode into pieces. In gameplay, as many as 200,000 individual cubes or voxels can appear on-screen.

Indeed, the whole world of RESOGUN is actually made up of these voxels, so the levels themselves can to a certain extent be destroyed.
Enemies appear not just in the sky, but also on the ground, in contrast with the Super Stardust series, and gravity means that debris will fall to the ground.
Multiplayer
RESOGUN will feature two player cooperative play.
There will also be online leaderboards, and the game places a heavy emphasis on aiming for high scores, showing your combo building on the screen.
