Last month Ubisoft revealed Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, a 2D side-scrolling entry in the Assassin's Creed series. The game is set to release as part of Assassin's Creed Unity's Season Pass in early 2015.
Today, Eurogamer published an interview with Alex Amancio, Assassin's Creed Unity's creative director, who says that the 2D side-scrolling concept is "a really great way to explore some of the other universes we've created".
Amancio then strongly hinted at additional spin-off titles, saying "I don't want to spoil the surprise, but the idea is that we have this rich universe - we're going to use it."
So it looks like we can expect to see even more 2D side-scrolling Assassin's Creed games in the future, a move that is likely to prove controversial with some of the fan base as the series begins to feature multiple releases each year.
