Sucker Punch Productions - Overview

Sucker Punch Productions was founded in October 1997 by a group of people who formerly worked at Microsoft on various productivity and software development applications. They are based in Bellevue, Washington. In 1999, they released their first game, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, which was developed for the Nintendo 64 and published by Ubisoft. After Rocket was released, they signed a deal with Sony in 2000 to make the Sly Cooper series. Ever since, they have been making games exclusively for Sony.

After making three Sly Cooper games, they started working on a new game, inFamous, which was released on May 26, 2009. inFamous was generally well received by the gaming community, obtaining a score of 85 on Metacritic, and being offered for free as one of the games in Sony's "Welcome Back" program. On June 7, 2011, Sucker Punch released inFamous 2 to positive reviews, receiving an 84 on Metacritic.

On August 2, 2011, Sucker Punch Productions announced that it would be a wholly owned entity of Sony. Brian Fleming, managing partner at Sucker Punch Productions, stated at the time of the announcement:

“We’ve enjoyed an incredible relationship with Sony that has allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms. Equally important, the relationship with SCE has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties. And best of all, we get to keep doing what we do — pushing ourselves to make more innovative games and more exciting experiences for PlayStation gamers!”

After working exclusively on Sony's platforms for 12 years, Sucker Punch Productions is the sixteenth studio to become an entity of Sony.
