Devil May Cry was originally released in 2001. The game began production as Resident Evil 4 but after some time, the developers realized that the game bore little resemblance to a Resident Evil game. Instead, development was shifted to "Team Little Devils" and the game became the Hack n' Slash game Devil May Cry. Since then, the game and the franchise it started have become regarded by many as the example by which other games in the genre are compared.
Since its release in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, the original game has gone on to sell 3 million units, had an HD remake released in 2012 (750,000 units) and been rebooted into DmC: Devil May Cry in January 2013.
The game sees Dante in his demon hunting shop, waiting for a tip on a new job. He is soon visited by Trish. She informs him that the Demon King Mundus who was defeated by Dante's father Sparda is attempting to return after 2,000 years. Dante sets off to Mallet Island to find Mundus and prevent his return.
