Mundus is the ruler of Hell and the main antagonist of Devil May Cry and it's reboot DmC. Born over 2,000 years go, Mundus quickly gained power and planned an assault on the human world, but when he was betrayed by his chief general, Sparda, Mundus was defeated and the gates of the Underworld closed. In a fit of revenge, Mundus attacked Sparda's human wife and killed her.
In major difference between the original Devil May Cry and the rebooted DmC is that Mundus' motivations for killing Dante's mother, Eva, was due to Sparda's betrayal over his lover for her, an angel. Other nateable differences are that he rules Limbo City in human form via his business ventures such as the soft drink Virility.

Devil May Cry (2001)
Devil May Cry was originally released in 2001. The game began production as Resident Evil 4 but after some time, the developers realized that the game bore little resemblance to a Resident Evil game. Instead, development was shifted to "Team Little Devils" and the game became the Hack n' Slash game Devil May Cry. Since then, the game and the franchise it started have become regarded by many as the example by which other games in the genre are compared.4.235
