Sparda is the father of Devil May Cry protagonist, Dante, and was the chief general in Mundus' army. When Mundus planned an assault on the human world, Sparda betrayed and defeated him. Sealing the gateway to the Underworld with his power, Sparda choose to live the rest of his life in the human world, taking a human by the name of Eva as his wife and having twin sons: Dante and Vergil.
In major difference between the original Devil May Cry and the rebooted DmC is that Eva was an angel and it was this reason that Mundus killed her and exiled Sparda for eternity.
