When the battle begins, go to the wall in front of you and find the ladder to climb up. At the top, begin making your way to the throne room until you see some intruders arriving. Take care of the three officers on the right side of the castle, then make your way to the middle and clear the three officers there.
Go outside and to the south to take care of Sun Jian, Sun Ce and Sun Quan. Once you do, Yuan Shao and some more officers will appear. You can't really access the officer on the left side of the screen, so go after Yuan Shao. Not too long into the fight with him, Lu Bu will end up showing himself inside the castle. This causes Yuan Shao and his other officers to retreat, opening up the gate on the east side.
Lu Bu will eventually reach the throne room and the south gates to the castle will lock, leaving you with the east gates as the only opening. As soon as you enter the east gates, Cao Cao and his officers will appear. Defeat them and Cao Cao to open up the doors that lead to the area before the throne room.
You'll find both Zhang Liao and Diao Chan outside of the doors leading into the throne room. You must defeat both of them in order to open up the doors, so do that and then head inside to confront Lu Bu. Once you defeat him, the battle will be over.
