Final Fantasy XIV was first mentioned in August, 2005, under the codename of Rapture, when Square mentioned they were working on a new MMORPG. It wasn't until Sony's E3 2009 that Rapture was revealed to be Final Fantasy XIV, showing a trailer of pre-rendered CGI and some in-game action.
There was some confusion at first as to which platforms Final Fantasy XIV would be released on. Before the official announcement, the game was set to release for the PS3 and PC, then changed to the PC and XBox 360, with a PS3 release later. After that, it was said to be coming to all three systems, with a Mac and Linux version possible. It wasn't until the official reveal that it would be coming out for PC and PS3, with the XBox 360 version cancelled.
