Virmire is a warm, tropical world which has nevertheless remained mostly uncolonised due to its location near the wild Terminus Systems.
Shepard travels to Virmire when he hears that a Salarian strike force has found something of interest in the world. It is revealed that Saren Arterius has created a Krogan breeding facility on Virmire. Urdnot Wrex rebels because he does not wish to destroy the facility; he can be persuaded to follow, or killed. Before Shepard leaves, either Kaidan Alenko or Ashley Williams must be left behind to sacrifice themselves so that the others can escape.
