Commander Shepard
Commander Shepard is the protagonist and playable character of Mass Effect. Shepard can be male or female, and can have a range of different backgrounds.
Shepard is serving on the Normandy, an Alliance starship, under Captain David Anderson. After he is granted Spectre status by the Citadel Council (he is the first human to hold the position), he is given command of the Normandy. His mission is to stop Saren Arterius and Sovereign from unleashing the Reapers upon the intelligent races of the galaxy.
He makes the final decision on whether or not the Council survives, and which humans is chosen to serve on it or lead it.

Garrus Vakarian
Garrus is a Turian Citadel Security (C-Sec) Officer whom Shepard meets on the Citadel when he begins to search for Saren. He joins the team, and he and Shepard become close friends; he is even a potential love interest for a female Shepard.
