At the very beginning of the level, if you head left instead of right, you will come to an area with some moving platforms. Past those will be a Music Sheet sitting out in the open, so grab it and head back to the stage proper.
Once you get past the initial set of enemies and pits, you'll come across a new enemy, the Jouster, as well as a cauldron that periodically drops down some lava. The Jouster sits still and will only move towards you when you get close, keeping straight until it hits a wall and kills itself. In the next room, there will be another cauldron, so use the ledge to get past it and make your way up the ladder.
You'll see a bunch of dirt blocks and some flying rats here. These enemies only move a little bit towards you, then stop, homing in on your position; one hit will take them out. In the room beyond that will be more of the flying rats, some beetles and an enemy that shoots fireballs every couple seconds straight ahead.
Make your way past the initial gauntlet, then either get close to the fireball-shooting enemy or reflect the fireballs back (two fireballs will vanquish it or three normal hits). Before going up the ladder, there's a breakable wall underneath it with a red gem. There will be a golden knight in the next room, but it's a dummy and doesn't come alive; note that there are gems hidden behind the banners in this stage.
While the golden knight was a dummy in the previous room, the next one isn't and will attack. It takes a total of five hits to defeat it, although it takes a bit of trickery to get some good hits. It has a shield, which it will block your attacks normally, including the downward strike. You can confuse the enemy by doing this attack, then immediately moving to its side and getting a normal attack off.
To get the gem on the ledge in the next room, you'll have to bounce off of the jousting enemy. Proceed to the next checkpoint and you'll see some chandeliers hanging. When you get close, they will fall, so inch forward to get them to fall. The last one here is a little lower, so you can use it as a quick platform to get the gems on the ledge. Go down the ladder.
Here, you'll be presented with the first split path in the stage. The long ladder leading up continues the stage, but if you jump across the moving platforms to the left (watch the cauldron), you can line yourself up with the Shovel Knight indentation to access a secret area.
Jump across the top chandeliers and open the blue chest to find the one NPC from the village inside. There's one of these blue chests hidden throughout each of the Knight stages, with the NPC selling you a new Relic each time (this time is the Flare Wand). Note that if you don't buy the Relic in the stage, you can either replay the stage to try again or just go to Village and buy it from the NPC there (although it will be more expensive).
Use the long ladder now and you'll be in a room with three fireball-shooting enemies. You can use the ladder here to get to another checkpoint, or you can take the left path to go on a short detour. There are a few stray gems hidden in the dirt blocks, but make sure you leave the ones on the far left so you can reach the ladder.
In this next room, reflect the fireballs until you can get close and defeat the enemy. Before you go right, you can destroy the wall on the left, then destroy the left wall inside to reveal a chest. Go right and if you didn't hit the checkpoint before, do so now. Keep going right and you'll see a large bird enemy.
These large birds have an oscillating (wave) fire attack that they spit twice before taking a short break; find a spot you can stand underneath it. Up close, they will also lazily try to claw at you. They take a total of eight hits to defeat and are only vulnerable in the head. There are a bunch of flying rats in the next room, but there's a hidden area.
If you bounce on the enemies in the second half of the room, you can get on top of the ledge and go right. Here is a dead end with two breakable walls that have gems, as well as a chest in the lower right corner. Once you're finished, head back the way you came and break through the dirt block to go down. There's two joust enemies below a chandelier, but you can jump off the chandelier as it's falling to reach the gems on the right.
To the left of those gems is a breakable wall with a gem behind it, so grab it if you want and continue downward. There will be a series of small dirt blocks, with a golden knight on them. You can either fight it or just bypass it. A checkpoint awaits you in the next room, as well as a bouncing book, but ignore that for now and destroy the wall along the bottom left.
This will lead to a small room with some moving platforms and flying rat enemies, with a Music Sheet hanging in mid-air. Grab it and return to the book, bouncing off of it to reveal some platforms. Use these books to move to the right, avoiding the hot liquids from the cauldrons, as well as the flying rat enemies.
There will be a few chandeliers and platters with food up the ladder, so use those if your health needs refilled. One final large bird-like enemy guards the final corridor with the last checkpoint that leads to King Knight.
BOSS: King Knight
---
King Knight is definitely the easiest knight in the game, as his moves are easily dodged and he's rather easy to hit. He'll always start off the battle by doing a short hop followed by a longer one, then doing that two more times. After he does all three, he'll jump high in the air and pound the ground. If you're on the ground when he lands, your shovel will get stuck in the ground and you'll have to mash buttons to get loose. If you're stuck, he'll come up to you and swing his scepter at you (he does this whether you're stuck or not). He'll continue with the short/long combo, although he only does this twice now before following up with other attacks. The second different attack has him winding up and then dashing across the screen, trying to hit you with his scepter. As for the third follow-up attack, he'll make three trumpets appear on each side of the screen, which blow confetti. This confetti will fall down slowly and coming into contact will hurt you. Once he does all three follow-up attacks at least once, the pattern afterwards will be random, although he'll always do the hops first. You can actually use the same strategy you used with the Black Knight with this boss, as the downward strike on King Knight's head is the safest method of attacking. This is because King Knight tends to not stay in one place too much and has a lot of horizontal movement.
