The last high profile holdout of the Games for Windows Live service has finally moved on. Batman: Arkham Origins has ditched Games for Windows Live in favor of Steam for its achievements, service, and DLC. While previous games in the franchise were sold on Steam they featured heavy use of GFWL for DRM, requiring a separate CD key entry and use of the service for all DLC and achievements. Origins instead integrates achievements into Steam and will involve no extra DRM.
This came on the heels of the announcements that Ultra Street Fighter 4 would be leaving the service and the marketplace would shutdown. Games for Windows Live has enjoyed heavy criticism since its launch in 2007, initially as a paid service and later as a free DRM generally applied on top of Steam purchases. Microsoft announced the marketplace itself would close permanently on August 22nd, though the service will continue to operate for games that require it.
