In Mario Kart Wii there are a total of 19 items which are gained by driving through Item Boxes found throughout the track. The item you get will depend on what place you are in, the higher place you are the more likely you will find simple items like green shells. On the other hand if your trailer in the race you will have a higher chance of getting rarer items which can turn the tide of a race like Spiny Shells.
