XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS. The game is a re-imagining of the classic PC strategy game, UFO: Enemy Unknown, that introduces a new story and gameplay.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown puts the player in control of an elite multinational military organisation called XCOM, which is tasked with defending the Earth against an alien incursion. The player commands troops in the field in a series of turn-based tactics missions and carries out the research and development of new technologies based on captured alien technology.

Story
The game is set in the near future during a global alien invasion. A group of countries (called the Council of Nations) has banded together to create XCOM, the most elite military and scientific organization in the history of mankind.
Gameplay
XCOM: Enemy Unknown casts the player as the commander of an elite military organisation. Gameplay is divided into two distinct types. The player directs his/her soldiers in turn-based combat missions against alien enemies, whilst between missions the player organises XCOM's research and engineering sections in order to create new technologies and improve their base of operations.
XCOM HQ
XCOM's Headquarters is divided into four subterranean levels. At the beginning of the game only the first level can be accessed, but there is room on that level for additional construction. Each level is divided into grid squares. One facility may be built on each grid square.
Squad
When a Rookie gains enough experience, he/she is randomly assigned a speciality role. The following pages outline the four speciality roles.
Items
The Engineering section can manufacture new Items to equip your troops and aircraft.
Abilities
Each squad member can draw on a number of core capabilities (see: General Abilities)
Research
In the Laboratory, alien technologies and biology are investigated and dissected. Each research project unveils new technological developments which manifest as weapons, facilities, vehicles, and equipment available for purchase in engineering.

Development
Development first began on XCOM: Enemy Unknown in 2008 and took the form of a more straightforward remake of the original game. The game was subsequently revised several times. The incarnation that was ultimately released was first officially revealed in January 2012.
