Watch the opening cutscene and upon taking control of your character, move to the designated on your map. If you don't know where that is, you can hit the touchscreen/touchpad to bring up a map. Note that the in-game screen and mini-map will rotate as you move around, so it can be a bit disorienting at first. Enter North Promenade and then move to Nine Bean Coffee, initiating a lengthy cutscene once you enter it.
You're introduced to the two main characters, Lann (the male) and Reynn (the female), as well as an annoying little fox thing called Tama. She'll throw you into a mock battle to introduce the basics of battle. World of Final Fantasy uses the Active Time Battle (ATB) system. Characters take turns based on agility and the faster they are, the sooner they can act. On the left side of your screen is a bar, which represents that very thing. When a character's face reaches the top, they will be able to perform an action.
There are two layouts for commands, Basic and Classic. The latter is like other Final Fantasy titles, where you have a list of actions you can perform. Basic, however, will show the face buttons and assigns four actions (in the order you learned them) to them. For now, you can simply attack the Yurugu in front of you until you defeat it. Certain actions use Action Points (AP), such as Tama's Libra. and characters will recover AP whenever their turns come around or by successfully exploiting weaknesses.
| If you wish to move battles along quicker, holding the R1/R button will trigger a fast forward. |
It might be better to use the Classic layout for battles, as you gain access to some commands that aren't available in Basic, like Items, Abilities and Escape. Note that you can switch back and forth between the two with the L1/L button. After the battle is over, you will have to watch another cutscene, bringing you to the end of the prologue (you'll be asked to save).
