Obsidian Entertainment (Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth) was on the brink of shutting down before Pillars of Eternity managed to successfully achieve its funding goal via Kickstarter.
In part 1 of a documentary covering Pillars' development - which you can watch here - it's revealed that back in 2012 the company was hard at work on a major title for the new generation of consoles, but this project was cancelled and Obsidian forced to lay off a number of staff. Things got so bad that a date had even been set for the studio's closure.
Fortunately for fans of the team's work this was around the same time that Kickstarter was really taking off as an alternative source for the funding of video games. Kickstarter's success inspired Obsidian to develop a prototype and pitch for the gaming community, a prototype which was to become Pillars of Eternity and a Kickstarter campaign that quickly shot past its initial funding goal and managed to raise almost $4 million when all was said and done.
Pillars of Eternity is due to release on PC, Mac OS and Linux on 26th March.
