Birdo is a character from the Mario series of games, and is part of a species with the same name. There is a lot of gender confusion surrounding Birdo, as it is male in the Japanese version of the games, as well as in the North American manual for Super Mario Bros. 2. However, the trophy description for Birdo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl describes Birdo as "gender indeterminate" and uses the pronoun, "it," when describing Birdo.
Birdo's first appearance was in Super Mario Bros. 2, where it appeared as a mini-boss. In the game, it spit eggs and fireballs at the player, which it uses in its other appearances, although the fireball was only present in this game. Birdo's first playable appearance was in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64. After this, Birdo appeared playable in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart Wii, the Mario Baseball series, Mario Party 8 (Japanese remake), Mario Party 9, Mario Hoops 3 on 3, Itadaki Street DS and Fortune Street.
