During the working period, the main character must complete a job. There are six different jobs your main character can obtain: laundry, mailman, metal shop, wood shop, kitchen, and janitor. Not all of these jobs will be available all at once, though. They are unlocked over time.
Currency Earned through Job Quotas
Currency is earned from these jobs by completing a set job quota. The job quota must be completed during the work period in order to receive payment. If you do not fill up the job quota within that time period, then you get fired. Once the job quota is filled, you can leave as soon as you want.
In order from least to most amount of currency earned per job quota completed is laundry, the kitchen, the wood shop, and the metal shop. The Janitor and Mailman jobs do not appear as often, and there may not even be enough work for to fill up the job quota.
The Benefits of Doing Jobs
The currency you earn from the jobs will allow you to buy items you need or want from other prisoners. These jobs will also give you a chance to build up relationships with other NPCs, take part in bigger events that can affect the game world, and scavenge for resources during those jobs.

General Job Tasks
The tasks of the jobs are pretty easy. All your character has to do (in exception to the Janitor and Mailman jobs) is take an item, put it either in a machine to transform it or an area to craft it, and then take that new or renewed item and put it somewhere else.
Laundry
You must retrieve the dirty prison guard and prisoner garments and put them in the laundry machines. Once the laundry machines stop spinning, they blink. That indicates that the laundry is finished and you can obtain the now-clean garments. Put these clean garments in the clean hamper on the opposite side of the room.
Kitchen
Obtain uncooked, frozen food and put it in the oven. Once the food is complete, take the food and put it on the serving trays for the other inmates.
Wood Shop
This is where you craft furniture. Obtain three timbers from the pile of wood and put them on a crafting menu. This will allow you to craft a chair. After crafting the chair, put the chair in the assigned container.
Metal Shop
Here is where you craft license plates. You do so using the sheet metal on the print press. Place completed license plates in the assigned container.
Janitor
Get a mop or broom from the janitor's closet and clean up the various messes within the prison. Again, there may not be enough messes to clean up within the working period to fill up the job quota.
Mailman
In this job, you are required to retrieve mail and deliver them to their respective owners. The name of the owner will be on the envelope.
Gardener This job in essence is the Janitor of the POW Prisons / Outside Prisons, you are required to get a Hoe and wonder the grounds looking for weeds and the like, there may not be enough weeds to clean up within the working period to fill up the job quota.
