After debuting in the Mario Bros. arcade game, Luigi went on to appear in various games in the Super Mario series, with Super Mario Bros. being the first one. In it, he was nothing more than a palette swap of Mario, including the same abilities, and the player 2 controlled character. This continued in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.
It was in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels that Luigi was more than just a palette swap, as he could jump higher than Mario, but he had less traction. In the North American version of Super Mario Bros. 2, Luigi was one of four playable characters, with his character having the highest jump and his height being noticably taller than Mario for the first time.
In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi did not make an appearance at all, although he became playable in the Nintendo DS remake of Mario 64. He was a hidden playable character in both New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy, then subsequently became a playable character in each Super Mario game after that, although in Mario Galaxy 2, he was only playable when you decided to switch to him.
