You have to sign up for an account with 2K or some silly thing like that. Then it should update it automatically. However, I'm not sure at what point they stop making updates. I'm sure it's at some point before 2K14 is released because they want you to buy the new version.

I've been playing with my friends for some time, now. Despite being a finalist at university, I've managed to rack up around 250 hours in the last two months or so. The three of us all play different positions, and I think that this is key when selecting your signature skills. For example, as a PG, my friend plays with skills such as floor general, dimer and alley-oop, as a SF, the other uses things such as defensive anchor, scrapper etc. and as a SG, I use things such as Dead-Eye, spot up shooter or finisher. Your position definitely dictates what skill set to take up.
