Soul Sacrifice came about when Keiji Inafune left Capcom and thought about a number of ideas for potential projects. He ended up coming with the idea for Soul Sacrifice and thought that it would be a good fit for the PlayStation Vita, so he presented the concept to Sony, who took it up.
In addition to Keiji Inafune being involved with the project, musicians Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama are also on board. Mitsuda was a long-time Square composer who worked on a number of games from Chrono Trigger and Xenogears to post-Square projects including Mario Party and Kid Icarus: Uprising. Hokoyama has worked on a number of games, including Afrika and Resident Evil 5.
From the Sony side, Kentaro Motomura and Teruyuki Toriyama are the producers. Motomura worked on the Dark Cloud series and the Wild Arms games. Toriyama worked on the likes of Folklore and From Software’s Demon's Souls.
As of May 2012, Soul Sacrifice was 50% complete.
The game is set to be released on March 7, 2013 in Japan. There will also be a cosmic-red-colored PS Vita with a custom "Soul Sacrifice" design at the back to coincide with the release.
Its release in North America and Europe has been confirmed, but no release date or method of delivery has so far been announced.
