Aralon: Sword and Shadow - Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The following is the way I play through the game when I complete all of the challenges, kill as many enemies as I can and collect as much gold and loot as possible.  I complete the challenges and quests in the most even way possible, generally fighting the enemies and completing quests in ascending order to make leveling up the easiest.  It usually takes me 20-25 "days" to complete the game and I end at level 50 with around 150,000-200,000 in gold.  By that point, all of my armor is superb or better and I've got two or more great weapons.  I also keep the drake and one other mount to travel through the Kingdoms.  As I said above with the FAQs, feel free to contact me, L.A. Roecker, at ios_game_master@yahoo.com.

Timber's Bend

You will start out the game in your home when Sir Roderick knocks on the door.  He gives you information about your father, then dies, leaving you a quest (Speak with Sufok), to complete.  Take the gold from him and the materials in his bag.  Go over to your chest and take the torch, fishing pole, gold and whatever else may be in there.

Go out the door and enter Lyrah's house.  She will give you a quest (Tom Miller) and you may buy a few things from her.  At this point, I usually kill Lyrah.  She is a friendly target so she won't hurt your legal status and her level is low so she is fairly easy to defeat.  By defeating her, you will probably level up one level, if not more.  Regardless of whether you defeat Lyrah, you may raid the loot in her chest.

Exit her house and speak with Aven and Hans Longstride.  Each of them will give you a quest - Find Feskers (50 exp.) and Sunberry Gathering (50 exp. and sunberries).  You may then choose to engage in some target practice with the practice dummy.

After completing the target practice, you can go inside the Fox & Grapes.  Inside, you can accept a quest from Thressa (A Missing Husband - 250 exp.), the Innkeeper Jacob Tannen (Delivery - 20 gold, 100 exp.) and a guest, Othel Black (Can I Offer My Assistance? - 250 gold, 500 exp.).  Black is in the first inn room on the second floor.  After I accept the quest, I kill Black, who is a friendly target.  I also go next door to the second inn room and collect the loot from the chest in the room.

Next, leave Timbers Bend, go along the path outside of the village to the gnoll cave on the right and pick sunberries off of the bush immediately outside of the village.  Feskers is outside of the cave and inside, there are two chests plus the solution to A Missing Husband. If you continue past the gnoll cave, you will come around to a campfire (in front of you) and a sunberry bush (on the left facing the Old Mill).  Return to Timbers Bend and collect your reward to A Missing Husband, Sunberry Gathering and Find Feskers.

Picking Plants - when you pick plants throughout this game you will either get one or two plants.  I have noticed that almost always, if you stand very close to the plant but not in it, you will receive two plants.  This is true for sunberries, willow leaves, yuma seeds, fero pods and red ferns.  The only exception is skyblooms - you must get as close as possible to these plants and hope you get two plants.  There doesn't seem to be any consistency, however.

At this point, you may kill the friendly targets in Timbers Bend, which will help you level up - Hans Longstride, Aven, Feskers, Parran and Lyrah.  Do not kill Thressa, Jacob Tannen or the City Guard or you will become an outlaw.

Follow the path out of Timbers Bend to the Old Mill.  Enter the mill and complete the Tom Miller quest.  Do not kill Miller or take the loot from his chest or you will become an outlaw.

Once you leave the mill, you may cross the bridge or go fishing in the river.  You will have received an old fishing pole from the chest in your house.  At this point, however, you will not have any recipes to use so you cannot use it for yourself.  However, you can sell the fish for gold in Taryn Ridge.

Go over the bridge and through the gate past the old mill.  To the left, there is a gnoll lair.  There are three chests in this cave and several gnolls that will help you level up.

After going through the gnoll lair, continue on the path a little further.  You will see a bandit on the left and a sunberry bush behind him.  Past the bush, there is an obelisk and a tall bust.  Between the bust and obelisk, there is a side path that leads to a chest.

Once you come out from the side path, look to the river in the valley below your location.  Go down to the river and cross to the other side.  There is a hill and at the top of it, there is a sunberry bush and a chest.

Once you return to the path to Taryn Ridge, pass the bust and go down the next path on the left.  There will be another sunberry bush on your left just a little way down this road and across from the jetty to the small house.  Turn down the jetty and go behind the fence in front of the small house.  There is one more sunberry bush here.

Enter the small house and speak with Elyssa, where you can take the quest Safe Journey to Taryn Ridge (500 exp.).  Note that you only have three minutes to complete this quest so you will want to collect the loot from her house, located in the cabinet, before you accept this challenge.

Exit the house with Elyssa and return to the main path.  Go left on the path and cross two bridges towards Taryn Ridge and continue uphill into the village.  Speak to Elyssa and finish the Safe Journey to Taryn Ridge quest.

Go to the swamplands and obtain the crested axe for the Brash Brother quest (see above for detailed description of how to find the axe).  Also, gather the red fern plants and loot from the two chests in the swamplands; it is some of the best in the game (e.g. if you are playing warrior or paladin, it will have several pieces of superb steel armor, ruby swords and axes of wounding).  Teleport back to Callaheim and travel by mount or by sea to the Western Kingdom.  Speak with Koln and complete the Brash Brother quest.

Return to the second outland by land or by teleporting there.  Give Icefang her egg.  Note - you do not have to complete this quest to enter Shadowspire - if you stand at the entrance of the Shadowspire Mines, using Helga's ring or a Greenfin stew you can levitate over to the entrance to Shadowspire.  It is much easier, however, simply to take the ride from Icefang.  If you want a challenge, you may choose to fight Icefang.  She is a level 50, higher than Merificus (40) and Sheba (45) so it takes a lot of skill to defeat her.  It can be done, however, if you want to undertake it.  Moreover, assuming you complete the Stolen Egg quest, even if you defeat her, she will still be waiting to give you a ride to Shadowspire outside of her Lair.

Once you have reached the entrance of Shadowspire, enter and fight the Grawls and shadow spiders until you reach the chamber where Merificus is standing.

Defeating Merificus - it is somewhat difficult to kill Merificus because he can stun you unless you learn to effectively block this maneuver.  Except for the Rogue, each class has a defense like Armor of Air (Mage) or a Shield of Faith (Paladin) that it can use to block Merificus' stun.  You must start your protection before Merificus starts his stunning technique and keep it going or he will be able to come in and stun you.  The other way to keep him from stunning you is to keep him stunned.

One other way to quickly defeat Merificus is to save your game right as you enter his chamber.  Let him kill you.  Once you continue from the last save, run back across the bridge over which you just came.  Merificus will follow you but the bridge will collapse and he will be killed.

Once Merificus is killed you will automatically be transported back to the Throne Room in the Palace in Callaheim.  Talk to Darius and complete the quest (this should land you at level 50 if you aren't already there).  Darius will give you one final quest, A Parting Gift that will allow you to speak with your father's spirit from the grave behind your house in Timbers Bend.

Return to Timbers Bend and speak with your father.  Use the safety ring to teleport back to Callaheim and speak with Darius.
