The gameplay to this game focuses on teh player taking the role of many different Mario characters as Captain of their team and challenges other teams (Challenge Mode) until the player faces off against Bowser's team to see who will win the Cup of the mode. Exhibition Mode is also in the game. This allows the player to choose the captain of the team, as well as the other rosters, and challenge another team in a single game. Minigames is another mode the player can choose, and all they have to do is complete a certain mission for each minigame.

Although Shigeru Miyamoto was still involved with the project, he didn't produce or direct the game, with Tim Stamper being the producer instead.
