Many people now believe that Shawn Michaels is the greatest in-ring competitor of all time, a reputation that has been well earned through triumphs, championships and stirring performances on the greatest of stages.
But, it wasn’t always that way. There was a time that many did not have a glowing opinion of the “Heartbreak Kid.” It was never a question of physical ability with Michaels — he was an athlete the likes of which is rarely seen. But focus was a question mark.
Sure, he was good enough to become WWE Champion, but given his wondrous physical gifts, many believed that Shawn was not truly living up to his vast potential. He could truly be great, many experts would say, but he needed to hone the mental side of his game. That was the missing piece of the puzzle.
But, as sometimes happens, fate shined on HBK. He saw another young star with fire and drive, one who, like Shawn, was irreverent and fun, but was looking to make that elusive step toward greatness himself. It sometimes takes another equally talented athlete to provide the drive to seize greatness. That star’s name was Hunter Hearst-Helmsley, And together, through fate and happenstance, they joined together to form the core of D-Generation X.
Together, the group would engage in some of the wildest, more hilarious antics ever seen on TV. But admit the frivolity and laughter, D-X provided Michaels with the drive and will to become great. For all the insanity that they would instigate, D-X provided structure for him. Shawn Michaels was now in an environment where he could thrive, where he could become a legend. And that, he did.
