Gangrel joined the WWE in 1998, with his name derived from a vampire clan in Vampire: The Masquerade. He rose from a ring of fire, walking slowly to the stage, carrying a goblet of blood in his hands. He would take a drink and then spit the blood into the air.
He made his TV debut in August of 1998, on Sunday Night Heat. He later on formed The Brood, with Edge and Christian. He challenged X-Pac for a shot at his European Championship, but lost. He eventually turned on Edge and Christian, forming The New Brood with the Hardy Boyz.
