Super Mario 3D World adopts the traditional powerup system that was present in the older Mario games, such as the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World. That means Mario and the others are most vulnerable when they are small in size, but can grow bigger when they grab a Super Mushroom. If they get hit when they are small, they lose a life. When they are big, they can grab another powerup that will grant them special abilities, such as the Cat Suit or Fire Flower.
