It's interesting... I love Smash and I'm pretty decent (well above average but not quite top tier) and I can play most characters but I've always had a problem with Fox as well. Pikachu in SSB, Marth in SSBM, though in Brawl I played quite a few. Perhaps the links were my favorite. -
I'm punishing myself by going all "no items, same character, Final Destination". It seems to be forcing me to learn to play both more skilfully and more cautiously, but I do prefer having items and more exciting stages.
