Villagers are the main NPCs in the game, of which there are a total of 333. Each villager is an animal and comes in one of many different species (there are 34 species). They can interact with the environment, such as plant flowers or shake trees, as well as interact with the player.
Each villager has a set personality, of which there are a total of 8, four for each gender. Six of these are from previous games, while New Leaf introduces the Smug (male) and Uchi (female) personalities.
